Today, the first day of the challenge, I blended this fresh, organic bunch of goodness together:
- 3 leaves swiss chard
- 4 leaves romaine lettuce
- 1/2 small papaya (with a few seeds too - they're supposedly really good for you)
- 1/2 small banana
- 1/4 small avocado
- 1 handful blueberries
- 1 handful fresh herbs: parsley, basil and oregano
- 3 cups of water
One sad day a few years ago I discovered I had a host of food allergies and sensitivities and I couldn't have the classic GGS anymore. I was allergic to celery, the fructose in apples and pears didn't agree with me at all, lemons made my eczema worse and spinach spiked my histamine levels. Ugh.
But if you're finding yourself in a similar situation, here's the good news: the GGS is not about sticking to the letter of the recipe, it is about combining loads of fresh greens and fruits that work for YOU so they can energise you and make you feel and look your best! Not only that, it is vitally important to rotate your greens and fruits and to not make the same recipe each and every day, because we need to get the biggest possible variety of nutrients in our diet.
What also helps is to add a little avocado, because its healthy fats help slow down the sugar in the fruit just enough so it doesn't cause digestive problems for people with fructose malabsorption.
Just aim for your smoothie to consist of 70% leafy greens (e.g. spinach, chard, beet greens, lettuce, arugula, etc.) and 30% fruit (e.g. apple, pear, banana, pineapple, mango, berries, avocado, nectarine, peach, lemon, lime, etc. - anything but melons, since they don't pair well with other fruits and veggies). I love to add some fragrant fresh herbs in the mix too (parsley, cilantro, basil, oregano, lavender, mint, nettle,..) and will add a few drops of stevia if I like it a little sweeter.
So you see, the options are endless! I'll be having a slightly or radically different GGS every day, depending on what I'm in the mood for and what surprises my CSA box has in store for me this week. :))
If you have any questions, thoughts you'd like to share or have found ways of dealing with your allergies, I'd love to hear them!
Take care and let's get glowin'! ;)
